How to Clean Shoes: Techniques, Tricks, and Products That Actually Work

Cómo limpiar el calzado: técnicas, trucos y productos que realmente funcionan

Shoes go everywhere with us. They endure puddles, dust, spilled coffee, and long days. Over time, it's normal for them to become stained or discolored. But cleaning your shoes isn't just a matter of aesthetics: it also helps them last longer.

Whether you have white sneakers, leather boots, safety shoes, or summer sandals, this guide from La Corberana explains how to clean them properly, without damaging the materials, and with easily available products.

Before you start: what to consider

  • Identify the material : leather, synthetic, canvas, suede, rubber, etc.

  • Check the label for manufacturer's instructions.

  • Prepare your products and tools: brushes, cloths, water, cleaners, and protection.

Guide by type of footwear

1. Sports and everyday shoes

Material: fabric, mesh, synthetic leather

What do you need:

  • Soft brush or toothbrush

  • Multipurpose cleaner or neutral detergent

  • Warm water

  • Microfiber cloth

  • Mesh bag (if machine washed)

Steps:

  1. Remove the laces and insoles.

  2. Brush the sole with a stiff brush and the upper with a soft brush.

  3. Mix warm water with all-purpose cleaner and scrub in a circular motion.

  4. If necessary, apply a mild degreaser to the sole.

  5. Rinse with a damp cloth and let dry in the shade.

  6. Wash the laces in soapy water or with a little bleach if they are very dirty.

📌 Tip : If you use a washing machine, choose cold water and a delicate cycle. Never dry with heat.

2. Leather and synthetic shoes

What do you need:

  • Damp cloth

  • Specific cleaner for leather

  • Nourishing wax or cream

  • Homemade alternative: coconut or baby oil (for synthetic leather)

Steps:

  1. Remove dust with a dry cloth.

  2. Apply the cleaner with a slightly damp cloth.

  3. For stains, use alcohol (ink) or baking soda (on white leather).

  4. Dry away from the sun and apply wax or cream to maintain the shine.

🧴 At La Corberana you can find pH-balanced cleaners, ideal for natural or synthetic leather.

3. Suede or suede shoes

Delicate and velvety finish. Dry clean only.

What do you need:

  • Suede brush

  • White vinegar or alcohol

  • Stain eraser

  • Waterproofing protective spray

Steps:

  1. Brush against the grain to remove dust.

  2. For stains, apply white vinegar with a cloth and rub gently.

  3. Then, comb with the brush to restore the texture.

  4. Apply protective spray once clean and dry.

⚠️ Avoid using water directly. It may leave permanent marks.

4. White canvas shoes

Easy to clean, although they tend to stain quickly.

What do you need:

  • Sodium bicarbonate

  • White vinegar

  • Warm water

  • Brush or sponge

Steps:

  1. Mix baking soda, vinegar and warm water until a paste forms.

  2. Brush with gentle movements.

  3. Remove excess with a cloth and let dry in the shade.

💡 They can also be machine-washed if the manufacturer allows it. Always use cold water and a laundry bag.

5. Sandals and summer shoes (leather, rubber or jute)

  • The rubber ones are cleaned with water and disinfectant detergent .

  • Leather ones, with neutral soap and a damp cloth.

  • Jute rugs should be kept as dry as possible. Rub gently and let them air dry.

6. Work boots and industrial footwear

Safety footwear is typically made of durable materials such as treated leather, rubber, polyurethane, or technical fabrics. It withstands mud, dust, grease, chemicals, and other harsh conditions. Regular cleaning and proper disinfection are key to maintaining it in good condition.

What do you need:

  • Hard bristle brush

  • Warm water

  • Neutral soap or degreasing detergent

  • Microfiber cloth

  • Disinfectant or bactericidal spray

  • Leather grease or cream (if applicable)

Steps:

  1. Remove dried mud with a stiff-bristled brush.

  2. Mix warm water with neutral soap or degreaser.

  3. Clean the exterior with a sturdy cloth or sponge.

  4. Rinse with a damp cloth and let it air dry, away from direct sunlight.

  5. If they are leather, apply grease or cream to maintain flexibility.

  6. Spray the interior with a disinfectant spray to eliminate bacteria and unpleasant odors.

🛠️ Tip : Avoid submerging your boots in water, especially if they have a technical insole or safety toe cap. If they get wet inside, remove the insole and stuff it with absorbent paper.
